EFT/TAPPING/EMOTIONAL FREEDOM TECHNIQUE

Hello, my name is Melanie, I am a fully qualified and insured Accredited Advanced Practitioner.  I am based in the UK and work with clients via Zoom/Online so location isn’t an issue for your sessions.

Emotionally Focused Therapy/Tapping /Emotional Freedom Technique is similar to acupuncture, in that it uses defined acupoints but absolutely no needles – I like to think of it as emotional acupuncture!  We have over 2000 acupoints in the body, they are not just simple random points on the body.

Tapping on these points while addressing the root cause of distress sends calming signals to the brain which allows you to feel relaxed and in control.

Research shows there is a physiological response and after examining these acupoints under a microscope, it was found there is a high density of nerve endings and a high concentration of white blood cells at these sites.

Other research found that stimulating these acupoints makes the brain release chemicals, including:

  • opioids (pain relief)
  • serotonin (sleep, memory and mood), this is released in the amygdala and prefrontal cortex
  • gamma-aminobutyric acid (this produces a calming effect on the body)
  • helps regulate cortisol levels, cortisol levels increase when you are under psychological or physical stress

Research suggests that EFT is potentially more beneficial for mental health conditions than some more well known therapies like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and eye movement and reprocessing (EDMR).

So where are these tapping points?

There are 9 main points you will use in EFT.  There are more however these are the basic ones that are suitable for you to use in between appointments.

Whilst you think about a trigger try and rate it from 1-10 in intensity, then take a nice deep breath and gently tap round on these points.

Do it a couple of rounds and then think about the trigger again, check in with yourself and see how you are now feeling?

Continue with this until you feel the trigger has reduced, take notice of any sensations in the body and how you feel overall.

Well done – you have just calmed your body and mind in a very short space of time.

Isn’t EFT amazingly effective?

For any in depth situations/trauma, I would highly suggest working through these situations with a trained EFT Practitioner to ensure you are working correctly, without retraumatizing yourself.

EFT is not a talk therapy and as such you will not be forced to relive situations in depth, we will get there gently yet effectively together so you can feel light once again.
